A design practice that started in a backyard in Brooklyn.
McEwen Studio does design work focused particularly on the intersection of urban culture and global forces. The studio works in diverse urban situations and scales.
Since 2014, V. Mitch McEwen has led this design practice based in Detroit. Prior to relocating to Detroit, the studio was based in Brooklyn with a short stint in Stuttgart, Germany. McEwen Studio grew out of McEwen’s collaborations and tactics at SUPERFRONT, an experimental design non-profit that she founded in Bed-Stuy Brooklyn in 2008. Since 2008, McEwen Studio has encompassed exhibition design, architectural curating, performance collaborations and spatial political activism, as well as renovation and building design projects in Detroit, New York City, and abroad. The Studio’s work been profiled in PIN-UP, Architect magazine, and ARTnews, which said of McEwen Studio: “[The] work doesn’t really have a distinctive look so much as it has a feel — conceptual underpinnings rooted in wherever the site of a building, project, or installation may be.”
McEwen Studio is A(n) Office partner. A(n) Office was one of 12 US architectural practices selected to represent the US Pavilion at the 2016 Venice Architecture Biennale.
