LOVE SQUARE

LOVE SQUARE

Who is this Duffy? For our purposes today we can say he was an immigrant.
In the name of love and immigrants and freedom of movement and right to assembly, this proposal aims to honor both Duffy and the contemporary vitality that this tiny piece of open space supports in the heart of Manhattan. This is achieved by removing the 17′ statue of Duffy which currently blocks sightlines between the open square and the TKTS stairs. This granite statue presenting a 17′ high religious symbol and the figure of a man in military garb may be sold directly or auctioned to the highest bidder. Removal can be coordinated with a structural engineer. Once the statue is removed, the block can be renamed Love Square. Free of any fixed religious or military iconography, Love Square will be a place for
Radical self love
Black love
Participation
Citizenship
Peaceful protest
